23/08/09  Burnham Beeches Half Marathon

Another successful outing for the West 4 ladies who came 2nd overall. Issy (7th), Alison (16th) and Marion (30th) were beaten by Reading RR. Both Ali and Marion came 2nd in their age groups. Congrats to all and to Fiona.

The men did not fair quite so well, though came in a respectable 11th. London Heathside took the honours.

Despite the heat, the course is well shaded so is quite cool to run. Many say the route is tough due to the hills but there appears to be more downs than ups. I found the last two miles hard, where I actually walked for a bit. Gary was walking before half way, so much credit to him for not stopping at the end of lap one and going for a dip in the outdoor pool, which some of us did later. Excellent for tired bodies and minds.

At the time of going to press Colin was still out on the course - stop press, his time was 2.25.15, with a finishing position of 904th out of 953 finishers.

The last race of the series is actual races. You take your best time from the Richmond Park Run for the whole month of September. Good luck all.

31/05/09                 Dorking 10 Mile

Sunday saw the third race of the West 4 road race series at the Dorking 10.
The race started in the picturesque village of Brockham and took in two laps with testing hills followed by 3 miles of challenging undulations to the finish at the local rugby field. Not the horror story of a course I'd been led believe was in store from Mark's accounts of years gone by, but with the sun out it was hard work all round.

Matt Holden was first W4 home in 62:49 while Anna C and Isobel were 4th and 5th ladies respectively leading the West 4 Ladies team, also containing Marion and Susan, to victory. Anna C and Marion both won their age groups as well.

In the men's competition Gary pulls clear at the top being the only one to run all three races so far with John DC and Ali close behind. Anna C and Isobel lead the ladies standings with Susan not too far back in third. In the handicap competition only Marion and Susan beat their handicaps taking Susan to the head of the standings ahead of Isobel and John DC.

Heathside 5

The first race of the West 4 Harriers road race series took place on
Sunday 1st March at the Heathside 5 in Finsbury Park. Turn out was a
bit sparse with only 4 men and one lady on the start line.

The West 4 results were as follows:
12 0:29:05 Ben Madsen
28 0:31:33 Ali Yousuf
33 0:32:19 Gary Robinson
55 0:34:51 Jon Scott Francis
178 0:45:16 Shelley Martin

Full results are available at
http://www.londonheathside.org.uk/competition/heathside_5/index.php

The mens standings are as follows:
1. Ben 50 points
2. Ali 45 points
3. Gary 40 points
4. Jon Scott 38 points

In the ladies competition Shelley takes the 50 points for first West lady home.

In the handicap competition no one beat their handicap, which is not
too much of a surprise given the undulating course, but Ben came close
so he tops the standings closely followed by Ali.

1. Ben 7.5 points
2. Ali 7 points
3. Gary 6.5 points
4. Jon Scott 6 points
5. Shelley 4 points

The next race is the Kingston Breakfast Run where you can choose to
run in either the 8.2 or 16 mile race.
