The Cross Country season kicks off on Saturday 11th October with both ladies and men’s teams travelling to Tadworth AC’s fixture in Banstead. If you’ve never done a Cross Country before they are not to be scared of! In-fact they are really good fun as well as being fantastic for your overall running. The Ladies Race starts at 12.15 and members wishing to run should contact contact Alison Brownhill. alibrownhill@.... The Men’s race is at 3pm though Gary (W4 XC Captain) would prefer as many men as possible to get to Nork Park early to cheer on the ladies. The suggestion is to meet at the club at 11am for an 11.15am departure. If you can’t do this then please be at Nork Park by 2pm in order to warm-up properly etc. Men contact Gary Robinson. gary_robinson114@... or on his mobile 07803601580.
The place to be for a run alongside your fellow W4 members is Twickenham for The Cabbage Patch 10. Start time 10.00am on Sunday 19th October. To be noted that this is a ten MILE race not a 10K race. There are over 20 W4 members running this popular event which is hosted by local running club The Stragglers. Starting and finishing in Twickenham the course follows a loop, crossing the river in Kingston and Richmond and as always race HQ is the Cabbage Patch pub in Twickenham. This 10 mile race is for runners of all standards on roads and towpaths. Even if you’re not running come along and support those who are and post-race, enjoy a drink or coffee offered by one of Twicker’s finest establishments. Entries are capped at 1600 and it would appear this has now been reached. There is a ‘number swap’ scheme in operation. Best to go to the website for details. http://www.sportsystems.net/cp10/scripts/default.asp.
Marlow Half Marathon. Sunday November 2nd. Keith Simpson and Andy Bowen are thinking of entering this race and looking for fellow W4 runners to do likewise.
Sunday December 6th A few W4 members are running in the London Santa Run in Battersea Park, which, apart from being fun, raises money for a great organisation Disability Snowsport UK. They raise money to make winter sports accessible to disabled people. It’s a 6km run and the entry is £20 but for that you get your Santa Suit and beard which some members seem very happy about!!
Admittedly not only is it a great cause, but for those of you with staying power, it’s the day of The W4 Christmas Party so possibly an early start to festivities?

LOOKING AHEAD.
Ali Yousuf has asked me to spread the word about two possible overseas jaunts in 2009.
Berlin Half Marathon 5th April 2009. Ali notes that this is three weeks before The London Marathon but he is really keen to go as it’s “a great race in a great city”. Could be great for anyone who missed out on a London entry ...or even if you have a London entry, then as Ali puts it : “depending on who you talk to could be ideal preparation or a bad mistake!” At least it doesn’t clash with the TTT 2009.
Budapest Half Marathon 6th September 2009. The early bird catches the worm as they say. Entries for this are not open yet but again, have a think about going on this trip to a beautiful city for a lovely run with some lovely people.
If past overseas W4 trips are anything to go by then these will both be great fun. The advantage of thinking about this all early is that you get the fabulous logistics skills of Ali and Badders (who I think is organising Budapest) who source great deals on flights and accommodation and take away all the hard work. All you have to do is turn up and run (or support).
If you think you might be interested let Ali or Rachel know and we will keep you up-to-date here and let you know what is/isn’t going on.
AND.......
Rochelle has decided she would like us all to check out her ‘beautiful little speck of sand’ in the middle of The Channel and has sent out an invitation/challenge for us all to enter a race on Jersey in the near future. The options are a half marathon in either May or October, or a full (hilly) marathon/marathon relay in October. Same as above, get in touch with Rochelle if you might be interested in this and she has promised to look into travel and hotels and get back to us with dates for the events and options. Sounds good!
LIFT SHARES.
These are probably updated far more currently than in this bulletin but Keith is offering lifts to The Cabbage Patch and The Cross Country.
If anyone who has entered The Cabbage Patch Ten finds that they cannot run then could they please get in touch with me photography@... as I missed out on entering and would love to run.
APPEAL FOR MARSHALS From Andrew Lane, Stragglers RC. “Keith Haworth and I from The Stragglers are looking for volunteer marshals for the Cabbage Patch 10, on Sun 19 October, at 10.00 am. The marshalling on the course is reasonably straightforward but we need plenty of people. It doesn't matter if you haven't marshalled before because we give full instructions. All marshals get a free long sleeved race t shirt, plus free lunch and a free drink at the Cabbage Patch pub afterwards. If you can help, please contact me on andrewghlane@... or text me on 07867 554146 . Thanks very much. Andrew Lane.” From the coach. Mark Critchlow writes:
“With the clocks going back at the end of October it’s a good time to remind everyone about runner safety. This of course applies especially to our female members but really to everyone in this day and age. Remember the following: Wear light coloured clothing and where possible have some reflective gear if running at night. When running from home choose your route carefully and try to run in well lit areas and/or areas where there are lots of other people. Try to run with someone else if possible but if not, then always tell someone where you are going or leave a note (even if it’s to yourself!)
With things getting colder it is more important than ever to warm up properly before you run. If you can’t warm up (ie running from the office to home) then incorporate your warm-up into the beginning of your run. Stretching out after a run is equally as important and might save you from injury.
If you are entering the London Marathon then now is the time to start building up to full on training for it. What training should you do? You can talk it over with me or simply grab yourself old copies of running magazines, there are a shed load of different schedules there.
Cross country training: All/any training is good but Tuesday nights hills are a must and if you can do your long easy weekend run over mud all the better for getting used to it!
Enjoy...” Our Members have been doing..... GARY ROBINSON WRITES.... “Sunday 14th September saw West 4 Harriers out in force at several races. With a full team confirmed, plans organised and reserves ready the week before the River Relay I knew things were going well. Too well as it turned out as come race morning we had no race numbers! Never mind we managed to collect them at the race start so after a few frantic calls and changes of plan on Saturday afternoon and some slightly too fast and shouty driving from me on Sunday everyone had a number in time for their leg.
Conditions were perfect for running with dry, sunny but not too hot weather and a slight breeze. There were only 19 teams this year, a bit down on previous years but the atmosphere on the start line was as good as ever. The race was won by Sandhurst Joggers from "That Ealing Feeling" of Ealing, Southall & Middlesex AC. The West 4 Crouching Tigers finished a few minutes behind in 3rd place completing the 31.4 miles in 3:20:42. The team won a bottle of wine each and a donation to our nominated charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital. The West 4 Snoozing Kittens finished in 12th place in 4:00:08.
Well done to both teams but particularly to Ben who (unofficially) broke the course record for his leg! Thanks also to Rachel and Pete for support at the final changeover and finish line outside the Hawker Centre in Kingston.” Udder business. A huge W4 chunk of love to all our new Monday night members. Nikeeta Attwood. Susan Cargill. Lorraine Jennings. Farid Khan. Stephanie Harris. Stephane Hauguel. We hope you enjoy being a part of the club as much as we will enjoy having you run with us.
Good luck to both W4 Cross Country teams for their first fixture. Hopefully the club training sessions will stand you in good stead. With much of the club participating in The Cabbage Patch let’s hope we can show the other local clubs that we mean business. Special mention for W4 Marathon Man Keith Simpson who will be looking over his shoulder to make sure the monster doesn’t get him during The Loch Ness Marathon on 5th October. All the best for a good race and the time you hope for. Further down the A1 Scott Mitchell is running The Great North Run on the same day so look out for him on the telly mixing it up with The Kenyans.
Perhaps Scott and Keith can hook up for a few ‘Newcy Browns’ on the train home. (Scottish tradition on the east-coast line to drink as many of these as poss before getting to London).
This newsletter only works if people submit things to be included. So if you have anything to contribute then please send it to me whenever you want to at photography@.... It’s easier if you send stuff in ‘as and when’ you think of it so I can compile the newsletter over the course of the month and not have to do it all in a rush at the end. Thanks. Ideas and feedback always gratefully received. Negative or positive. This is for YOU.... So make it YOURS. Sorry if there are any omissions or mistakes in this bulletin.... I tried my best!
Results. River Relay 14/09/08. The West 4 Crouching Tigers finished in 3rd place completing the 31.4 miles in 3:20:42. The team won a bottle of wine each and a donation to our nominated charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital. The West 4 Snoozing Kittens finished in 12th place in 4:00:08.
The Crouching Tigers were (in running order): Gary Robinson, Anna Critchlow, Ali Yousuf, Ben Madsen, Alison Brownhill and Andy Bowen. The Snoozing Kittens were: Ian Carson, James Eatwell, Fiona Hopwood, Louise Clark, Bethan Hope and Tom Lamb.
Bristol Half Marathon . Well done to W4’s Andy Orchard who did a new PB of 1:33:30 at the Bristol Half Marathon.
Chippenham Half Marathon. W4’s Keith Simpson continued his preparations for Loch Ness at the Chippenham Half Marathon running 1:32:07.
Windsor Half Marathon. ***RUN OF THE MONTH*** W4’s Isabel Rea had a fabulous run finishing in 1.27.39, which was 8th female and 57th overall, out of 4,385 I believe. Really well done. Fabulous time on a really challenging, hilly course earns Issy the ‘Run of The Month’. If there was a prize Issy you’d get it.
Yellow Umbrella 10k, Chiswick.- Scott’s been trying to win this one since he migrated to the UK and finally managed to pull this off this year. Ali Yousuf was 2nd and Jon Scott-Francis, we think, was 7th (sorry if this is wrong Jon). Actually since writing this newsletter I have discovered that this is Scott’s 3rd time of winning the Yellow Umbrella so sorry Scott. I seem to only remember the times you get whooped by someone you can’t catch...which is every other year isn’t it?
Richmond Park Duathlon. In Richmond Park, three intrepid West4ians attempted two sports at the Richmond Park Duathlon. Rose Lewis finished her first Duathlon in 1:52:53 closely followed by Louise Bottomley in 1:53:12 with Steve Jessop snapping at their heels in 1:58:01.
Dorney Lake Relay Triathlon. W4’s John De Castro took part in a relay triathlon at Dorney lake completing the 1500m swim in 36 minutes. |
